Homebrewer Ryan Uy Goes Behind the Bar at Plain Sight Coffee

Ryan Uy has made a name for himself as a seasoned coffee enthusiast, with over a decade’s worth of knowledge in the craft of brewing specialty coffee. A self-proclaimed “proud homebrewer,” Ryan is always chasing the best of what specialty coffee has to offer. When he’s not brewing coffee at home, he’s probably on the lookout for the next coffee shop to put under his growing recommendation list, which he publishes on his Instagram @thenameisrye

Last June 23, we invited Ryan to take over our filter bar and try out our new single-origin coffee beans at the Plain Sight Coffee Roasters HQ. “Since 2015, I’ve been following Plain Sight’s journey from the tiny roaster in the kitchen to the launch of their space in Mandala Park today,” said Ryan.

“Seeing the way the company’s grown from the front row has been quite the privilege, and it was both exciting and a bit intimidating knowing I would be brewing for a community that has greatly upskilled in both experience and palate.”

Of course, Ryan was a natural behind the bar. For the whole day, he served a crowd of customers non-stop, brewing our latest release of single-origin coffee: Burundi Kayanza, China Tianjiao Pu'er, and Kenya Gachatha AA. We also held a Q&A for other coffee enthusiasts to learn from Ryan’s homebrewing journey including his brewing style, coffee preferences, and set-up.

Our participants also got the chance to ask Ryan about his journey as a homebrewer.

Pop-ups have been great opportunities for the coffee community to converge, and for Ryan, getting invited to do Plain Sight Coffee’s bar takeover felt like a full-circle moment. “My specialty coffee journey began ten years ago, after getting to try out a cup of coffee from, funnily enough, a coffee pop-up,” Ryan said.

“[It] changed my perspective on what coffee could taste like and led me down the rabbit hole of visiting different cafes, trying out a whole assortment of single-origin coffees, and seeing how baristas would use different brewers depending on the coffee and profile they wanted to achieve. ”

Our first-ever bar takeover with Ryan brought together coffee enthusiasts of different levels, from the humble homebrewer to the full-fledged barista. It was a great day to showcase our exciting new single-origin coffees, as well as learn from the community’s unique perspectives when it comes to brewing coffee.

“Beyond just brewing the coffees, it was great getting to share my story and connecting with others who share a love for this craft.” — Ryan Uy

“I am truly grateful to Plain Sight for the opportunity to share my passion not just for homebrewing but for specialty coffee as a whole. Beyond the joy of brewing, it’s really in being able to learn and grow from this community that has been the absolute best part of being in specialty coffee.”

With Plain Sight Coffee’s bar takeover series, we’re shining the spotlight on some of the most passionate coffee brewers around the locale. Stay posted on who our next guest brewer will be by following us on Instagram at @plainsightcoffee.
