Aeropress (Inverted Method)

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • AeroPress
  • 18 grams coffee
  • 200mL brewing water
  • Filters (paper or metal)
  • Coffee grinder (optional)
  • Kettle
  • Timer
  • Stirrer
  • Mug

The AeroPress is a brewer that coffee enthusiasts absolutely love to play around with—they even made a brewing method that uses it upside-down! The Inverted Method, as the name implies, involves immersing coffee with a flipped AeroPress. It solves a common issue people face when preparing coffee with the standard method: premature dripping. Preparing the coffee plunger side down prevents the brew from dripping through the filter, letting the coffee grounds steep in the water for longer until you are ready to extract. This allows for more control and consistency, as well as a richer, more full-bodied cup of coffee.

In this brewing guide, we’ll cover the two variations of the Inverted Method: the non-bypass and bypass methods, which allow you to control the dilution and intensity of the coffee.

How to prepare your coffee:

Grind size: medium-fine

Coffee amount: 18 grams

Brewing water: 200ml hot water

Non-Bypass Method

  1. Place the paper/metal filter on the filter cap and screw it on the chamber.
  2. Pre-wet the filter and pre-heat the chamber by pouring in hot water, discard the water after.
  3. Remove the filter cap, insert the plunger to the chamber and stop at the 3.5 mark.
  4. Place the AeroPress upside down, with the plunger at the base and the chamber on top.
  5. Pour in 50 ml of hot water and add the coffee grounds. Wait 30-45 seconds before adding another 150ml of hot water. Stir gently to ensure the grounds are well saturated.
  6. Screw on the filter cap and gently push the AeroPress down to release air on top.
  7. Swirl the AeroPress carefully before turning upright to lessen the grounds that may stick on the plunger.
  8. Gently press the plunger until the coffee is extracted.

Bypass Method

  4. Place the AeroPress upside down, with the plunger at the and the chamber on top.
  5. Pour in 50 ml of hot water and add the coffee grounds. Wait 30-45 seconds before adding another 110 ml of hot water. Stir gently to make sure that the grounds are well saturated.
  6. Screw on the filter cap and gently press the AeroPress down to release air on top.
  7. Swirl the AeroPress carefully before turning it upright to lessen the grounds that may stick on the plunger.
  8. Gently press the plunger until the coffee extracted.
  9. Pour in 40 ml of brewing water and swirl in gently.
