From Cafés to Homebrews: Meet the Women Shaping the Coffee Community

Plain Sight Coffee hosted “Women in Coffee: Coffee and Conversations,” a special Women’s Month event that celebrated inspiring women in the Filipino coffee industry. This year’s theme highlighted women’s experiences as cafe owners and homebrewing content creators, where guest speakers shared their unique stories and insights into the industry.

"This year, we’re featuring guest speakers who achieved success from the most familiar of places: at home and in coffee shops," said Erika Rodica-Lee, Head of Marketing at Plain Sight Coffee.

"Plain Sight Coffee has always believed in fostering community and inclusivity in coffee, and that’s exactly why we’re here today."

The event opened with a bar takeover by homebrewers Tita Aey and Iana Peralta, which offered guests freshly brewed coffee to kick off the afternoon. After refreshments came “Home Base Narratives,” the first Q&A panel featuring Tita Aey and Iana. This segment explored their experiences as homebrewers and content creators, as well as the exciting opportunities and remarkable achievements their craft made possible. Closing up the segment was a brew demo by Tita Aey and Iana, using single-origin beans Adame, Lunji Estates, and Barokah Kerinci.

The second Q&A panel featured the theme “Third Place Stories,” with cafe owners Aina Aquino of Jungle Base and Andrea Cunanan of Vaked who shared their experiences of running community-driven coffee spaces. Ending on a high note, the bar takeover resumed to wrap up the session. Throughout the event, guests enjoyed exclusive event promos, including a 10% discount on all coffee beans, a 15% discount on all merch, and a complimentary cup of coffee with every coffee bean purchase.

More than a celebration, “Women in Coffee” aimed to create a welcoming space for meaningful dialogue about the realities women faced in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

"Women have a large role in the coffee industry, especially in farming and production. Despite that, there is still a huge gender gap, where women have less access to resources and leadership opportunities," said Sean Lee, CEO of Plain Sight.

"This is why this event is important to us, because change can come from anywhere. It can come from influential voices on social media, business owners driving gender equality in the workplace, or even consumers like us. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as sparking conversations and showing our support."
